The announcement was made by ARCH Orthodontics founder Dr. Robert Chavez, who said, “We are delighted and excited to be able to bring to our patients the high level clinical skills and experience that Dr. Cohen has fine-tuned over the past several years while working with patients of all ages to help improve their oral health, their smiles and their self-confidence. Her dedication to our profession, to her patients and the community are in concert with our history of ‘creating generations of beautiful smiles.’”
Asked about her choice of profession, Dr. Cohen said, “I have always noticed a person’s smile – whether it was during my travels to foreign places or near home. A nice, friendly smile always makes me feel welcome. And to watch how an improved smile transforms a person’s confidence is overwhelming. It affects their everyday lives on both a personal and professional level. It is an honor to be able to help so many people of all ages improve their smile.
“Orthodontics is a blend of science and art in the most perfect way. We look at the face and its proportions in all directions and then move teeth using the laws of physics. It’s always exciting when a patient has his/her braces taken off at the end of treatment and he/she can’t stop looking in the mirror!” she added.
Dr. Cohen earned her B.S. in Biology magna cum laude from Tufts University. While enrolled in the DMD Program at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, she earned two prestigious scholarships. She volunteered and became Co-Director of Operation Mouthguard, implementing an age-appropriate curriculum on oral health and oral hygiene. In 2008 she earned her DMD degree with Honors in research.
Dr. Cohen has volunteered with Give Kids A Smile, providing oral exams and oral hygiene instructions to children at no cost. At Harvard Dental School, Dr. Cohen served on two key committees and worked as an Orthodontic Assistant in the School’s Faculty Practice from 2006-2008. This year, following an intensive three-year program, she received her Certificate in Orthodontics and Post-Doctoral Master of Medical Sciences (MMSc) in Oral Biology.
In the world of research, after graduation from Tufts, she worked first as a lab technician at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department of Molecular Neuro-Oncology and at the Dana Farber / Harvard Cancer Center Neuro-Oncology Core. During 2002, after receiving the Paul Dudley White Traveling Fellowship from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Cohen participated in an intensive basic research project at the University of Helsinki, Finland. During 2009-11, she performed research at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s Department of Developmental Biology where she developed and presented a National Institutes of Health proposal. She has authored / co-authored several articles based on her research.
Dr. Cohen has volunteered at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged in Boston. Last April, she received funding from Harvard University and traveled to India where she did dental work in an orphanage in India. She worked part-time as a General Dentist in Newton for the past three years.
Her hobbies include painting, ceramics, fly-fishing and jogging, and she enjoys spending time with family, friends and pets.
