11 Year-Old Wins “Take Your Smile on Vacation” Photo Contest, Orthodontists Judged More than 50 Entries: 3 Honorable Mentions

(FALL 2012) — This past summer, scores of ARCH Orthodontics patients took their ARCH t-shirts on vacation in the hope of winning an iPad in the practice’s first ‘Take Your Smile on Vacation’ photo contest.

First place winner, 11 year-old William Sullivan of Bridgewater, beat over 50 entries with a photo taken by his mother Karin at Six Flags Adventure Park in New Jersey. In the photo William feigns screaming at a life-size shark replica. The contrast of his teeth (with braces) and the shark’s giant teeth adds to the humor and interest of the photo.

Drs. Andrew Chase and Robert Chavez of ARCH asked patients to send photos of their beautiful smiles taken during vacation. Entrants had to be wearing their ARCH T-shirt.

Dr. Chase said, “The judges were amazed and impressed with the creativity and imagination that went into all the entries. It wasn’t easy to choose ‘the best’ from such an impressive field.” Photos were judged on overall interest, originality and photo quality.

Karin Sullivan says her family was on a two-week vacation in their camper. The trip included Six Flags – New Jersey, Vermont and then New Hampshire on the Fourth of July. She recalls, “William saw the shark at Six Flags and got out his ARCH shirt which we carried with us everywhere for the two weeks. William thought it would look funny if he appeared to be scared of the shark, and it showed off his braces, too. He really wanted to win this contest and made sure we had the shirt with us in case a ‘photo opp’ came up. I’m very excited for him — and a little jealous of his new iPad!” William, a 6th grader at Williams Intermediate School in Bridgewater, said, “I’m a VERY happy for winning this contest. My parents would never buy me an iPad!” William is in chorus, plays the flute, enjoys Boy Scouts, and loves computer games.

Three patients who won Honorable Mentions for their creative photos are: Deborah Azer of Randolph; Lindsey Barrett of Canton (see photo); and Jack Mahoney of Brockton.

All photo entries are posted on ARCH’s website (http://www.sesameblogs.com/archorthodontics). The Honorable Mention winners received 500 ARCH OrthoRewards Bonus Points, redeemable toward prizes. All other entrants received 300 points.

Dr. Chase said, “We wanted our patients to take their healthy and attractive smiles on vacation and take memorable photos. Life is full of things to smile about and Orthodontic treatment is an investment in that smile which will reap benefits for a lifetime.” Dr. Chavez said the office received entries from adults and children, noting, “Braces and other Orthodontic treatments are not just for kids anymore. In fact, today one in five Orthodontic patients is an adult.”
