Mom and four kids gain improved smiles, healthier teeth, more self-confidence
(ISSUED SUMMER 2014) — It’s a fairly new phenomenon: Parents and their children having braces at the same time. In recent years, Dr. Robert Chavez and Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics have had numerous multiple-patient families in which one or both parents and three or four offspring have undergone an Orthodontic regimen. ARCH has nine offices south of Boston and on Cape Cod so they’re in a good position to spot such trends.
A good example is a local family in which mom Barbara and her four children ages 9 to 17 all are or have been patients at ARCH’s Bridgewater office. “I first got braces with Dr. Chase and Dr. Chavez when I was in my 30’s,” says Barbara. “My husband had them as a teenager and his teeth look great. I was envious and wanted my teeth to look just as good, both for self-improvement and to be less self-conscious when speaking or smiling.”
Fast forward and it turned out that all four of Barbara’s offspring needed Orthodontic work: The 17 year-old high school junior and 15 year-old freshman both had their braces removed in 2013 but still use retainers. Another son, 13, started his Orthodontic treatment last December, and Barbara’s 9 year-old daughter got her first appliance in February. Barbara notes, “The ARCH staff makes it easy and stress-free to manage. They’re friendly, appointments are punctual, and the office is well-run.”
“Having been through it, I am a good coach and cheerleader, especially on the days after adjustments when it may be a bit uncomfortable,” smiles Barbara. “I assure them it will feel better, I know what they’re going through, and they know that braces are a means to a wonderful end – a great smile. Our first two children are basically done, and the younger two can see their brothers’ dramatic results. Nowadays, braces are accepted by their peers without the stigma of the old days.”
Dr. Chase reflects on the multi-generational family phenomenon: “It is becoming more common when we are finishing up a child’s case and reviewing their successes, that a parent says, ‘I’m next.’ It is an emotionally rewarding feeling for me as a practitioner to hear those words. It tells me that I have done my job as a specialist to make a difference in the lives of not just the patient, but their entire family.”
How can a family afford Orthodontics for so many members? Barbara says dental insurance covers some of the cost. Payment is easier thanks to ARCH’s “very fair payment plan.” And, she says, “Having healthy teeth and a great smile and the self-confidence that brings is worth it to us. We make choices and sacrifices along the way. Maybe our cars are a bit older, but instead of car payments, we have great smile and healthy teeth payments. It depends on what your family chooses to focus on.”
Dr. Chavez says a key to ARCH’s success is adherence to 5 core values: Support, Professionalism, Integrity, Respect and Excellence. “The acronym SPIRE makes it easy to remember and implement with every patient.” ARCH Orthodontics offers free consultations for all ages – a $500 value – and no-interest financing.
