Trained on 2 Continents, Orthodontist Marks 6th Year with ARCH Orthodontics: “I love my work.”
BOSTON, MASS. (Issued SPRING 2012) — Dr. M. Gabriela Marquez, now in her sixth year in practicing at ARCH Orthodontics, recently passed a rigorous exam and has joined the elite ranks of her profession, attaining the prestigious title of Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Diplomates must pass a comprehensive written examination along with the presentation of clinical case reports.
Dr. Marquez practices primarily at ARCH’s Hyde Park (Mass.) office where many patients are comfortable discussing their treatment with her in Spanish.
The certification announcement was made by Dr. Robert Chavez, founder of ARCH Orthodontics which operates 9 offices south of Boston and on Cape Cod. He said, “Involvement in the certification process is a demonstration of Dr. Marquez’s pursuit of the highest proficiency and excellence in our profession.” He said successful passage allows an Orthodontist to present treated cases that are evaluated by expert examiners of the Board.
Born in Denver, Dr. Marquez’s family lived in in Caracas, Venezuela, until she was 12, when they moved to Virginia. “We traveled a lot because my father, now retired, was a General in the Venezuelan Air Force, and an American-trained ‘Top Gun’ acrobatic pilot. He worked as a civil engineer with a Master’s degree in computer science from the University of Denver. Her mother is an architect.
Why did Dr. Marquez choose Orthodontics? “In high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do – maybe to be an archaeologist. I liked science and a friend suggested dentistry. Of all the dental specialties, Orthodontics seemed most challenging and appealing. I like the fact that my work helps my patients in many ways for their entire lifetime.”
Dr. Marquez and her husband, a vascular surgeon, have two sons. “Often I had to take our older son (now 14), to classes with me at the B.U.’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Years later he surprised us with the amazing amount of information he absorbed during those classes. Perhaps he will choose to become an Orthodontist, too.” She is especially proud of her training with Dr. Anthony Gianelly, internationally recognized professor of Orthodontics, who served as Chair of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics for over 40 years.
Dr. Marquez earned her first dental degree from the Central University of Venezuela, and her second at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine where she was a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and finished second in her class. She then entered the Orthodontic Program at B.U. and attained her Master of Science in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in May, 2006. Since graduation, she has been on staff as a Clinical Assistant Professor in B.U.’s Orthodontic department. She lectures on Mini Implants and Temporary Anchorage Devices, and welcomes the most challenging surgical cases that require teamwork among dental specialties.
Dr. Marquez enjoys her long-time association with ARCH Orthodontics: “Dr. Chavez, his son, Dr. Andrew Chase, and all of my colleagues are like family. We all share the same philosophy – to deliver the best quality and ‘create generations of beautiful smiles.’ I love my work.”
