ARCH Orthodontics, which recently celebrated its 41st anniversary since its founding in Stoughton, has named Lucy Cobb as Chief Operating Officer for the practice, which has grown to 9 offices stretching from Hyde Park in Boston to Hyannis on Cape Cod.
The announcement was made by Dr. Robert Chavez, founder of the practice, and his son, Dr. Andrew Chase. Dr Chase noted, “With such a busy practice and so many patients, staff and moving pieces, Lucy has the unique ability to keep things on track and organized.”
Born in The Azores, Portugal, Lucy Cobb arrived in Stoughton with her family in 1989. While in high school she started working at ARCH in 1996. She went on to earn her BS degree at Suffolk University with a BS/BA major in International business and a minor in marketing.
Lucy says, “ I am very close to all our team members who are all like family. We include each other in our personal lives which I feel shows through in the way we treat our patients. They become part of our family, too. If I’m able to make one thing in their daily lives a little bit easier, that makes my day. It can be as simple as changing an appointment or making someone feel more comfortable when in our office.” Lucy is married and has two children, Stella and Mason.

For years, Orthodontists told patients there are no shortcuts: Moving teeth is a deliberate, methodical process that takes time, especially for younger, growing patients.
Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics says, “Even if a patient is totally compliant and your Orthodontist is brilliant, there’s one other factor that neither party can control: How your body responds. Estimates of treatment time are based upon the complexity of the problem and the normal response of teeth to typical Orthodontic forces.”
But now, ARCH is among the first in the area to introduce one of the first major Orthodontic innovations in 15 years: AcceleDent, a light, comfortable device that can accelerates tooth movement by as much as 50% when used in conjunction with traditional or invisible braces. It uses tiny vibrations called micropulses to activate the gene that is accountable for remodeling or changing the bones surrounding the teeth allowing them to move. The technology is based on methods used in Orthopedic Medicine for nearly 30 years.
Since its introduction in 2009, thousands of patients worldwide have successfully been treated and many say it makes their Orthodontic experience more comfortable. AcceleDent is the only FDA-cleared medical device designed to hasten Orthodontic treatment.
Patients use Acceledent for 20 minutes per day for the duration of their treatment, from whenever they start. For example, if a patient started treatment 9 months ago, the remaining treatment can be sped up by up to 50%. So a 24-month case that started 9 months ago could finish in about 7-10 more months rather than 15 more months.
The patient receives a mouthpiece sized to fit around existing braces or aligners along with an activator. Dr. Chase says the micropulses are gentle and exert about 8x less force than an electric toothbrush.
In one case, an Orthodontist told his 50 year-old female patient with an open bite that projected conventional Orthodontic treatment time would be 24-30 months. With AcceleDent, treatment time was shortened to 15 months. In another case, a 12 year-old boy with crowded teeth saw his projected conventional treatment time shortened from 26-29 months to 16 months.
“By offering accelerated treatment with AcceleDent, we’re able to make our patients’ Orthodontic experience faster and more pleasant, with less discomfort,” says Dr. Chase. “We encourage current patients to inquire since all are candidates for the procedure. It’s non-invasive, super comfortable, can speed up the treatment considerably, and, for patients experiencing discomfort, that is usually reduced significantly using AcceleDent. We also discuss this option with each new patient, too.”
