Teen’s Mom Says, “Her Confidence Begins with a Beautiful Smile.”
WESTWOOD, MASS. (issued Spring 2015) — Last fall, when Westwood 7th grader won the 2014 International Junior Miss New England Pre-Teen title, her mom, Dr. Dawn Khoury, said, “To have the confidence to go on stage in front of hundreds of people and present yourself with confidence — as well as having an interview before professional judges — are skills that will benefit Kiersten no matter what she does in life. Much of this starts with a beautiful, confident smile.”
Now, Kiersten’s confidence and poise have come through again as she recently earned the title of Miss Massachusetts Jr. Teen United States. Kiersten and her mom attribute some credit for her great smile to her Orthodontist, Dr. Andrew Chase at ARCH Orthodontics’ Westwood office. Last year, she was selected as ARCH’s Patient of the Quarter.
Dr. Andrew Chase has worked with thousands of patients of all ages, from 4 to 84, and knows that people gain self-confidence when their teeth are properly aligned: “We strongly believe that a beautiful smile can make a difference in your life – psychologically, socially, professionally, and from a health standpoint.”
Kiersten, an honor student at Thurston Middle School, hopes to become a Chiropractor just like her parents Drs. Wassim and Dawn Khoury who own the Khoury Center for Chiropractic and Wellness in Dedham. She volunteers for various charities and participates in public appearances and charity functions. She plays the flute, dances at The Dance Center of Dedham on their junior competitive team, participates in Girl Scouts, and is a student council representative at Thurston.

Lauren Kuhn, 2014 Miss Massachusetts, has a close connection to the dental world. She’s a member of Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s Class of 2017. In the 2015 Miss America Pageant on national TV, Lauren was a Top 5 Finalist, recognized for her virtuoso piano-playing.
ARCH’s Dr. Andrew Chase says, “We share common values and a philosophy with the Miss Massachusetts program: to strive for excellence and to do our part to improve the community. We believe life is full of things to smile about and that Orthodontic treatment is an investment in that smile which will reap benefits for a lifetime. We know that a healthy and attractive smile always creates a better impression.”
“As a third year Doctor of Dental Medicine candidate,” Lauren says, “I see that proper flossing and brushing are two of the most important preventative measures a person can take to maintain their oral health. For those with crowding, malocclusion, or other Orthodontic issues, these simple tasks can be more difficult. In addition to helping avoid sensitivity and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain from malocclusion, Orthodontics also helps people succeed because they are more likely to be confident in their smile and generally, more confident in themselves.”
Lauren adds, “Orthodontics is an option for both children and adults and an Orthodontic consult can help people of any age determine whether treatment is right for them. Three of my grandparents had braces past the age of 40 and they are still grateful for their results today. I want to say thank you to ARCH Orthodontics for helping me make adjustments to my bite and alignment of my teeth. The proper positioning of teeth and a comfortable bite can make such a big difference in quality of life!”
Dr. Robert Chavez says. “ARCH annually supports the non-profit Miss Mass. Scholarship Foundation because of its dedication to helping young women recognize their potential.” Five years ago, ARCH became the first Miss Massachusetts Orthodontic sponsor in the organization’s history. The new Miss Mass. will be chosen in late June in Worcester.

(ISSUED SPRING 2015) — How many people can say they got to see in person most of their heroes in one place – at age 11?
Dedham 6th grader Joey Lenane’s innate golf prowess and endless practice won him a coveted spot to compete in the second annual Drive, Chip and Putt Championship National Finals played in early April at the Augusta National Golf Club, prior to the start of the Masters Tournament in Georgia. Joey placed 5th overall in his age category. Just 80 junior golfers representing 30 U.S. states and Canada earned an invitation. The tournament was broadcast live on the Golf Channel.
Upon his return to Dedham, Joey said, “Augusta National was an amazing, incredible experience for me and my family. We got to watch the practice round of the Masters. I saw Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, and many others.”
Whether it’s golf or his smile, Joey’s mom Leilani and dad Tim say Joey always aims for perfection. To be prepared for the spotlight when he makes it to the pros, Joey says, “It’s important to have nice teeth because usually the first thing people notice is a nice smile. Nice teeth give people a good impression. I have braces now. My Orthodontist is Dr. Taylor at ARCH Orthodontics in Westwood. He’s nice and friendly. I think a good Orthodontist takes the time to make every patient’s smile the best it can be. It’s like taking your time in golf, making every shot the best it can be.”
The future pro says, “I started playing golf when I was 9. I play on a Junior tour and have tournaments in the spring, summer and fall in different states. Science is my favorite subject. Golf is my favorite sport but I also play baseball, and basketball. I really want to be a professional golfer when I grow up. I noticed that many of the pros have great smiles.”
Joey says he admires Bubba Watson “because he is fun to watch, he hits the ball really far with his driver, and he is a great golfer with two major championships. He won the Masters twice and has many other tour wins.”
Joey has fans, too. “My older sister is 14 and had braces a couple years ago. My little sister is five and really cute. I love that she looks up to me!”
Joey is working on his short game and playing on the US Kids Boston Tour. He plans to participate in the Drive, Chip and Putt tournament again with an eye toward Augusta again. And his great smile will lead the way.
